Waack’s pies are rated among Australia’s best

The Pie Buyers Guide to Australia gives the first comprehensive account of the Australian meat pie and features more than 300 pages of reviews and information.

Compiled by brothers Paul and Tony Clancy, the guide offers readers advice on where to get a good meat pie.

Paul and Tony travelled from Port Douglas to Perth and Coral Bay to Hobart tasting and assessing pies at more than 400 bakeries.

The brothers used a rating system to judge the pies, with the top level awarded five gold pies. Only eight percent of bakeries achieved the prestigious rating, including Waack’s Bakery.

However, the brothers agree it’s about more than just taste.

“This book is about more than reviews. It is about what constitutes a decent pie, our pie culture and history,” they said.

Australians love a good meat pie and with the release of The Pie Buyer’s Guide to Australia, at last there is an essential guide for grey nomads, travelling salespeople and anyone who makes a pie the lunch they long for from the moment they start work.

Apart from being the essential reference no home, caravan or library should be without, it will be the foundation for further discussion and enlightenment about pies.

Stawell and district residents will be able to see for themselves why the pies at Waack’s Bakery stacked up so well on a national scale, with a visit to their bakery in Main Street.
